Tips for making butter boards
- Use the best butter you can get. You could make it even more special if you made your own homemade cultured butter.
- Use an acidic ingredient. Add something to brighten the taste profile, lemon zest, balsamic vinegar, olives, or capers are all acidic and help create a juxtaposition to the rich butter.
- Fresh herbs give more taste. While dried herbs are great in a dish, when you need even more taste, go for the fresh kind. It’ll brighten up the board.
- Use more salt than you think you should. Salt makes things more delicious, and you should use a lot of salt, but use a super flaky kind, it will seem less salty when they are lying on top of the butter, and also provide a crunch.
- Think texture. Adding things that give you different texture elements will elevate the experience.
- Don’t make it ahead of time. Instead, assemble all the toppings and then make the board right before serving.
Conclusion on this butter board recipe
So, is a butter board amazing or what? As an avid butter lover, I will say it’s a hard yes for me.

It’s not something I could (um.. should) eat every day, but man is it just perfect when you get it. Served with freshly baked sourdough bread, or even a sourdough ciabatta, to stay in the Italian lane. It’s just out of this world.
Try it. It’s super easy to make.
